Organisational Culture in the Finance Industry of New Zealand and its Impact on Wellbeing
Date: 17 July 2024
Time: 2-5pm
Location: WA224A, WA Building, AUT City Campus, 55 Wellesley Street East, Auckland CBD
Organisational culture underpins much of what goes on at work. When it is constructive and inclusive, culture leads to employee wellbeing. A focus on wellbeing, which existed to some extent before, has emerged more strongly in organisations in the Covid-19 era. Many have not only sought to address the stress created by the pandemic but also to create cultures which embrace a range of wellbeing activities and resources. Thus, while organisational culture can lead to wellbeing, a strong thread of wellbeing helps to weave a positive and cohesive culture.
The programme focuses on the finance industry of New Zealand, following an interview-based study conducted at AUT on the impact of organisational culture on performance and wellbeing. In many countries the finance sector has a poor reputation for demanding workloads, performance-driven cultures and questionable ethical practices. Our study, however, found that a range of employees across New Zealand’s finance industry mostly revealed that their organisations did care about their staff, even though some aspects of the culture were not exactly what the participants would have liked.
This seminar will reveal the findings of the research study, three case studies, not necessarily in the research project, and an indication of what employers can do to embed wellbeing in their organisational cultures. It should also be of interest to those in other sectors of the economy.
This seminar is free and co-hosted by the New Zealand Policy Research Institute and the Department of Management, Technology and Organisation in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
